Verb Tenses

uncountable nouns take singular Avoid "Can you __?", instead "Please give me."

Simple Present *habits/repeated actions *general truths *instructions or directions *fixed arrangement(sure to happen; scheduled)

Present Continuous/Progressive -an action began in the past and may continue in the future *present time (now, right now, these days) *future time (Planned actions; tomorrow, tonight, next week) (drawing hahaha) *complaining something (with adverbs: always, continuously, constantly)

Present Perfect (experience)

  1. Cannot be used with time expressions that indicate a specific time

❌ (yesterday, a year ago, when I was young, etc.) ⭕ (ever, since, never, already, yet, so far, before, recently, till now, etc.)

Present Perfect Continuous -action began in the past and continues until now -the emphasis is on the duration

SIMPLE PAST *finished action a.when we have a finished time word b. general knowledge that the time period has finished c. details of news *unreal and imaginary things in the lottery or future (conditionals--if phrases)

PAST CONTINUOUS *action has begun in the past *longer action in the past was interrupted

PAST PERFECT *past action completed before second past action *talking about some point in the past and wanted to reference an event that happened even earlier *third conditional (used to explain the condition of the 'if-clause| (regret conditional)

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS -past continuous action occurring when second past action occurred -duration is important

SIMPLE FUTURE

formal- will informal >>unplanned- will >>planned- going to/present continuous

WILL voluntary action proms prediction request possibility

GOING TO action is already decided definite plan anticipation planned action

FUTURE CONTINUOUS -continuous future action will continue to happen when another future

interrupted action in the future specific time as an interruption in the future parallel actions in the future

FUTURE PERFECT future action will be completed by the time another future action occurs

  1. completion before a specified point in the future
  2. duration in the future
  3. certainty about the near past(GTK)

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS be happening when another future action occurs (emphasis on duration)
