What the Subscription Is (If Asked)

Great question! I would love to present to you what The Privacy Protection Subscription is an added layer of security that helps protect your card details and personal information when paying bills online. It minimizes the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access, especially during digital transactions.

It’s completely optional and appears during bill payments, either with your biller or with us, for users to review and confirm.

Requesting Cancellation and Refund (Simple)

Thank you for letting us know. I understand this may have come as a surprise, and I’ll be happy to review this for you!

How did I sign up for this? I understand how this charge can be confusing, and I appreciate you reaching out. I checked your account, and it shows that the Papaya Privacy Protection Subscription was accepted during a recent bill payment.

This subscription helps keep your personal and card information safe when you pay bills online. What’s good about it is that it adds an extra layer of protection to help prevent your data from being exposed or misused — especially during online transactions.

When you made the payment, a pop-up offer likely appeared on your screen. It gave the option to subscribe, click ‘X’ to close, or tap ‘Not Interested.’ The subscription only goes through if someone confirms it. Sometimes it can be selected by accident, and that’s completely okay. I’m here to help and make sure we take care of this for you.

Thank you for letting us know. In some cases, the subscription may be accepted during the bill payment process, where the offer is shown and requires confirmation before proceeding. I can check if the subscription was activated during a recent transaction.

Asking How They Were Subscribed

That’s a great question. The Privacy Subscription is an optional service that appears during online bill payments, either through your biller or with us. It’s designed to protect personal and card information.

It may have been accepted during checkout, sometimes unintentionally.

Irate or Accusatory Customer (e.g., ‘This is a scam!’)

a. “I understand why this is upsetting, and I’m really sorry for the confusion. Let me assure you — Papaya is a secure and legitimate bill payment platform, and we do not process any unauthorized charges.”

b. “I understand why this is upsetting. Let me assure you, I’m here to help clarify what happened and walk you through the next steps.”

c. “Your concern is valid, and I appreciate your patience as we look into this together. Let’s go ahead and review the transaction so I can provide you with accurate information.”

You’re trying to take money from my card!" (Stay calm and non-defensive)

a. I completely understand your concern. Please know that Papaya doesn’t initiate charges on your card without authorization through a transaction. If there’s a charge attempt, it’s most likely related to the subscription service that was accepted during a bill payment session.

There are multiple attempts for the subscription!

a. “Thanks for bringing that to our attention. Sometimes, multiple attempts can happen if the subscription renews automatically or if a billing attempt failed from a previous transaction. Let me go ahead and check your records to confirm the number of attempts, the dates, and what caused them.”

(If the customer asks if it will happen again):

That’s a great question. Once the subscription is active, it renews based on the billing cycle. But if it’s canceled, it won’t charge again. However, in the future, when you make a bill payment — either with your biller or with us — the Privacy Protection offer may still appear as a prompt. It won’t auto-subscribe you unless you choose to confirm it. I can also document your concern and flag this for further review if needed.

Explain What the Subscription Is — Clearly and Briefly

a. Focus on what the service provides, not on why they should keep it. “The Privacy Protection Subscription is designed to help keep your card number and personal info safe during bill payments. It adds a layer of protection against potential misuse or exposure online.”

  1. Clarify How It Was Added — Let Them Realize It Was Confirmed

a. Don’t say “you subscribed” — instead, describe the process neutrally. “This offer appears during checkout, usually as a pop-up with options to accept or skip. The subscription only activates if it was confirmed during that step.”

If they mention wanting to cancel, don’t jump ahead. Stay neutral and document.

I understand you'd like to explore your options. What I can do is document your request and share the details for review.” “We can definitely take note of your feedback so our team can follow up through the appropriate channels.

Phrases to Subtly Reinforce the Value of the Subscription ● These help shift the focus to the benefit, in case the customer is unsure or just venting. “Many customers choose this to help protect their information, especially when paying bills online.” “It’s an added layer of security or double security that helps prevent your personal and card details from being exposed.” “This is a helpful option for those who do a lot of online payments or want extra peace of mind. ● If the Customer Is Irate but Doesn’t Directly Ask for Cancellation

(Stay calm, explain, and offer to review — never cancel unless they explicitly say to.)

“I hear your concern, and I’d be happy to look into this for you.”

I hope this message finds you well.

I’ve successfully initiated a refund of $39, as the charge has already been reflected in our system. Please allow 2–3 business days for the funds to appear in your account, depending on your bank’s processing time.

Feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance or have additional questions.
